The Christmas groove

I'm using a picture from last year's blog, but I'm happy to report that the vintage 1979 beater is still going! Of course, the true test is tomorrow's annual baking of the secret family recipe for Orange Cookies. In all my reading (and eating!) of Christmas cookies, I've never seen anything like this one. It's light and lovely and fragrant with orange...and takes forever to make. It also uses 4 cups of flour...a real challenge for my old beater.
In addition to the family orange cookies, I've made 3 new recipes. We'll have to see how they go over. I've browsed Gourmet and NYTimes for recipes and printed some out. But even as I collect them in a binder, I miss the history of a shared recipe. The recipe for orange cookies is in my Aunt's hand, which is scary-similar to my late Grandmother's. The tradition of recipe cards with "from the kitchen of" printed on them is one that I miss. I think the new brown sugar ginger crisp cookie is one I'll make again..and I never would have found it without being able to browse the Gourmet web site, but I do miss the spots and stains...and even difficult handwriting...of shared recipes from family and friends.
